This may be why we have recently been inundated with requests for language courses for staff and managers in companies across Cambridgeshire and Lincolnshire. The number of international companies and importers is growing in this region and businesses seem to be recognising that investing in developing employees’ language skills is a wise decision that will bring long-term benefits. We are finding that the most popular languages are Spanish, French and German, with Mandarin becoming increasingly in demand.
Companies are now realising that to expand their products and services in other countries it is essential they can communicate in the language of that country. Who would you prefer to do business with? – Someone who has made the effort to communicate in your own language however basic, or someone who can only speak English?
As Nelson Mandela’s famous quote states, “If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his own language, that goes to his heart.”
“Nearly two-thirds of businesses in the UK want to recruit staff with foreign language skills.” – Financial Times,
It is clear that even a little knowledge of a foreign language can hugely improve your career prospects. You do not need to be fluent in a language to get by in that country. Just by learning a few phrases for a short trip abroad can make your stay much less stressful and more enjoyable. Even if you do not wish to work in another country or go abroad on business trips, it is obvious from the number of foreign companies operating in the UK such as Japanese car manufacturers, importers dealing with suppliers in France and Spain that you may still need to communicate with foreign speaking staff in your office or on the telephone or by email.
Each language is unique and by learning a different language this opens up a whole new way of thinking and living across the world. Even if others have a good level of English, this should not mean you don’t bother to learn their language. By learning someone else’s language you will find it easier to understand the social, political and economic situation of their country which will help to develop good working relationships and mutual trust, which is essential to do effective business with people from other countries.
